Grassroots Motorsports $2018 Challenge Competition Bulletin
August 1, 2018–Track conditions at Gainesville Raceway have caused an unforseen schedule change at the Grassroots Motorsports $2018 Challenge. Dragstrip repaving previously planned for 2019 has been rescheduled to October 1-December 1, 2018, meaning the $2018 Challenge will not be able to race on Gainesville Raceway's dragstrip.
Fortunately, this is not uncharted territory: Previous $2000 Challenges have excluded the drag racing portion of the competition due to inhospitable weather, meaning we have some experience modifying the event while maintaining its unrivaled camaraderie, so the $2018 Challenge will be held even though the drag strip is being repaved.
Previously, the $2018 Challenge's timed events consisted of an autocross and a drag race. Instead, they will now consist of two different autocrosses. The first course will be a traditional regional-level autocross, while the second course will be a more-open, faster layout. Each competitor's fastest time on the second course will be substituted on the scoring rubric in place of the planned drag race.
Given the choice, we would of course prefer to run the event as originally planned, but this format change should allow the event to proceed with as little inconvenience to those already registered as possible, while allowing each competitor far more track time than they'd otherwise get.
The Grassroots Motorsports $2019 Challenge will return to the autocross, drag race, and concours format that competitors have come to know and love, so they'll have the opportunity to take full advantage of Gainesville Raceway's fresh pavement in 2019.
If this schedule change affects your decision to compete, we're happy to apply this year's entry fee towards next year's $2019 Challenge, or can give you a full refund if you'd prefer. Just email Nancy Gomes or call (386) 239-0523 and we'll get things sorted out.
